The promise of data science and “Big Data” is now being recognized broadly; while this promise is real and its impact on science and society is undeniable, its potential is far from realization. Beyond dealing with large-scale datasets, we need to co-develop people and the underlying science to transform raw data into useful and understandable information. At Illinois we are making substantial and successful investments, building on our vast strengths in data science foundations and very large scale computing infrastructure, to advance a range of data intensive efforts in the physical, life and social sciences, advancing the world’s ability to analyze and synthesize structured and unstructured data. Our efforts are transforming scientific education for a new generation of researchers that are inherently interdisciplinary, embrace new research paradigms, and have data science literacy and fluency.

Last Updated: Warning: date(): It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'America/Chicago' for 'CDT/-5.0/DST' instead in /mounts/samwise/disks/0/www/datascience/html/index.php on line 128 January 23, 2013
